JEFF PEARLMAN ON FAVRE

JEFF PEARLMAN ON FAVRE

Favre

July 18th, 2008 by Jeff

I am sick and tired of Brett Favre.
Great player, great guy. But gimme a friggin’ break.

You wanna continue your career? Fine. But after announcing your retirement following a prolonged (and very public) debate, don’t rip the Packers for disrespecting you. I’m not a guy who usually supports teams over players, but, well, I’m supporting a team over a player.

Despite the conventional wisdom of players and 99% of the media talking heads, the NFL owes Favre absolutely nothing. Nada. It made him a wealthy man for the obscure (and relatively meaningless) ability to throw a wad of dried pig flesh 60 yards in the air to another man wearing sticky gloves and and Breathe-Rite strip. So enough with this, “The Packers need to let Brett play where he wants to play. They owe him that much …” Blah, blah, blah.
If anyone owes anyone anything, it’s Brett owing me a little peace and quiet. Because he’s driving me friggin’ crazy.

Either shut up and go to camp with the Packers as a backup (hell, you’ll win the job in two weeks, max) or begin your life giving Rotary talks and working 4-H bake sales.
But make up your mind. Please.

DITTO.

If it wasn't the offseason, Im sure sport writers can find something better to talk about, but this drama is beyond getting old.

My problem is when people start listing him among the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Yes, the man was good, even great, but among the greatest? One guy tried to tell me Favre was top 3, to which I responded with by saying, he's not even the top QB on a Green Bay Packers list. Green Bay had 11 championships before Favre ever came along, and Bart Starr drove them to a few of those things.

I agree with Jeff...why not just win it back. Why is he above that?

The solution for Brett is simple. Just show up at camp...either fug off or compete for the starting job, and then by the start of the season, the Packers will have to, by league rule vis a' vis his contract, either cut him, trade him, or pay him $12 Million. Packers sure as hell ain't gonna pay ANYONE $12 mil to be a back-up. They're also surely not dumb enough to cut him when they could trade him. That all means, he'd either start for the Packers or he'd play somewhere else. All the rest is just pontification.
